NITROUS OXIDE AT THE BIRTH COTTAGE

Nitrous oxide, often called “laughing gas,” is available at The Birth Cottage as an option for easing discomfort and reducing anxiety during labor. While many people are familiar with its use in dental offices, nitrous has been used safely in birth settings around the world for decades and is becoming increasingly available in hospitals and birth centers across the United States.

How it works: Nitrous oxide is a colorless, odorless gas that you inhale through a handheld mask. You control when and how much to use—most people begin breathing it in just before a contraction starts and stop when the contraction ends. The effects are felt within seconds and wear off quickly once you stop inhaling, allowing you to stay alert and mobile during labor.

IS NITROUS OXIDE RIGHT FOR YOU?

Nitrous oxide may not be the perfect fit for everyone, but it can be a helpful option for those who want to take the edge off the intensity of labor. It can also be useful during certain procedures that sometimes follow birth, such as suturing, to reduce anxiety and discomfort.

Please note: Nitrous oxide is available only at The Birth Cottage and is not offered for home births.

Talk with your midwife about whether nitrous might be a good choice for you and learn more about its benefits and limitations.
